Thoracic and Robotic Surgery

Our surgeons lead global efforts to improve robotic thoracic surgery and deliver better patient outcomes.

Where innovation meets expertise

2025 Outcomes

Thoracic surgery is continuously evolving, with a notable increase in the use of robotic platforms. Our growth has expanded our capabilities and established us as one of the busiest robotic surgery centers globally. The Plano location is a leading facility that guides other institutions on robotic thoracic surgery techniques. Our commitment to excellence guarantees that we deliver our patients the highest quality of care, supported by the latest technological advancements and a highly skilled medical team. The breadth of robotic procedures we offer includes:

  • Chest wall resection
  • Diaphragm surgery
  • Esophagectomy
  • First rib resection
  • Lung decortication
  • Median arcuate ligament release
  • Paraesophageal hernia repair
  • Sympathectomy
  • Pericardectomy/pericardial window
  • Pulmonary resections
  • Resection of mediastinal mass
  • Thymectomy

Accomplishments

  • We actively participate in the Texas ImmunoOncology Biorepository (TIOB), which collects and stores serial biospecimens—including tissue, blood, urine and stool—from cancer patients over time. These specimens are paired with comprehensive clinical and radiological data from a diverse patient population, representing various racial, social and ethnic backgrounds. This unique integration of patient journeys and data makes TIOB a vital resource for advancing cancer research and precision medicine.
  • Over the past two years, we’ve achieved an impressive 0% mortality rate in robotic oncologic surgeries, including procedures such as esophagectomies, thymectomies, mediastinal mass resections and chest wall resections.

Our Plano center is a global leader in robotic thoracic surgery, offering a broad spectrum of advanced procedures with zero oncologic mortality over the past two years — delivering minimally invasive care and exceptional clinical outcomes to North Texas.

Rolling 12 months from March 2024–Feb. 2025

Plano has recently earned the highest possible 3-star rating from the Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS) for lung cancer resection procedures, part of the General Thoracic category. This recognition places Plano in the top 10% of thoracic surgery centers nationwide.

John Squiers, MD, a CT resident trainee, and Andrew Nguyen, MD, his mentor, were awarded the AATS Foundation Thoracic Surgical Robotics Fellowship. This fellowship provides an advanced educational experience for general thoracic surgeons and their attending surgeons in North America.

Innovations

  • We use the ION robotic bronchoscopy platform to perform minimally invasive peripheral lung biopsies, pushing the boundaries of robotics in thoracic oncology.
  • We incorporate Cytalux (pafolacianine), a leading-edge fluorescent imaging agent that enhances surgeons’ ability to visualize and remove tumors with greater precision during surgery.
